Kanlı Aşk

Afghanistan has been in a state of emergency for four decades. In this documentary, for the first time, only women talk about how their lives have changed in Afghanistan. Six Afghan women take the audience on a journey from paradise to hell. The former "Miss Afghanistan 1972" has her say, as does the current Minister of State for Human Rights, the daughter of the last communist president, activists and members of the Afghan parliament. Six Afghan women make the endless war tangible and show how women in particular became victims of violent politics. But it also becomes clear how much courage and bravery Afghan women have. Directed by Lucio Mollica, Marcel Mettelsiefen and Mayte Carrasco, women like Shukria Barakzai, who campaigns for women's rights, show us a very different Afghanistan than we know today. Using mostly unseen archival footage, the film shows girls growing up, going to school and participating in social life in a colorful Kabul in the 1960s. But the "golden age" ends when the monarchy is overthrown and ideological battles break out between communists and Islamists. Even the Soviet Union cannot calm the situation. Its mighty army is defeated by Islamic fighters. When they finally take over Kabul, a downward spiral begins that turns the lives of Afghan women into a dark dungeon. But the women want to take their fate into their own hands. They want their country back.
