The play DAS WERK by Austrian playwright Elfriede Jelinek, laureate of the Nobel Prize in literature, was staged by Nicolas Stemann at the Vienna Burgtheater in 2004. During the Nazi era, construction was intensified (the first cut of the spade was made by Hermann Göring), first with volunteers, then with forced labor and eventually with prisoners of war - all taking place in the extreme conditions typical of mountain land and with insufficient food and equipment. The official death toll for the construction of the power station is 160. However, those are only the casualties of the post war era, and at that time, the laborers – among them a lot of former Nazis who would not have found work anywhere else – were already much better equipped. In fact, the death toll is much higher. Austrian identity after the war, when the country was declared free and innocent, was largely based on that technical tour de force. The hydroelectric power station of Kaprun was finalized in the year 1955, the year of the Austrian Independence Treaty and dragged a trail of national myths behind, which in fact were literally based on the bones and the exploitation of those killed.” (Elfriede Jelinek)
