Les Habits neufs du gouverneur
The Governour’s New Clothes is a musical comedy which parodies the trappings of power and its strange effects on African leaders. This entry by former grand prize winner Mweze Ngangura puts an African spin on popular children’s story – the Emperor’s New Clothes. Féli is a 40-something working in a huge multinational company in Africa. Against expectations, he is made governor of the mining province of Zerbo, which is also involved in a conflict with its powerful neighbours, the Krowas. He’s Zerbo while his wife Mopaya is a Krowa, their son is called Little Prince. The new governor cannot officially introduce his Krowa-wife to his citizens. So he concocts a plan to keep his wife and son out of the public eye by hiding them in secret apartments of his new palace. However, Feli has a few enemies including the head of palace security who wants to be governor himself. So he enlists the help of a local beauty queen to win Feli’s confidence. Of course being Congolese, it is important for the governor to don the most fantastic clothes for his inauguration. His disguised enemies are hired as the governors’ dressmakers – they connive to make an imaginary ceremonial costume, which they say will remain invisible only to stupid folk.
