In 1968 Gibellina was destroyed by a violent earthquake. The complicated history of this small Sicilian community is told along with another story, of a challenge that was made to the people of Gibellina. To pose for a photograph on the site which had become the taboo space of the whole community, the Grande Cretto by Alberto Burri. Created in 1989, the work is an enormous expanse of white cement that covers the twelve hectares of rubble that used to be the historical center of the town.
