Violet Guymer emigrated from England with her husband and small children to Northern Canada. Her husband contracted the Spanish Influenza and she was left widowed with five small children. Through necessity she took over her husband's business at a time when women didn't work and as a result she became the first female funeral director in Canada in 1919.
