Living History - 1000 Parker
Astonishingly, a remnant of Vancouver's industrial past survives as a sprawling, enigmatic labyrinth of wood, brick and cement. Originally built for western Canada's largest manufacturer of furniture, the Restmore Company, built on land retrieved from a tidal flat, thrived in the first half of the last century when Vancouver was a major manufacturing center. But, by the late 1950's, Restmore was in decline and the four-storey building was shuttered in 1967. The early 70's brought a renewed but temporary use as a warehouse as the building was slated for demolition. Today it is occupied by painters, sculptors, potters, photographers, designers, woodworkers and other artisans who worship the structure for its open spaces, high ceilings, community spirit and the odd ghost. Living History - 1000 Parker chronicles the history and salvation of the iconic building as told by a handful of its current artists which number in the hundreds. The filmmaker also tracked-down the 97- year-old grandson of the original owner who worked in the factory in his youth. Over the last 15 years, Vancouver's ludicrous real estate boom has decimated artist studios throughout the city. The four-storey Parker Street, built prior to the areas current 2 story zoning, was always thought to be impervious to developers. Now, ironically, the thing that has ensured its survival for over 100 years- zoning bylaws- is at the root of its imminent demise.
