The Netherlands kept its borders increasingly closed to the many refugees from Germany between 1934 and 1938. But after Kristallnacht, November 1938, 1,500 Jewish children were allowed to come to the Netherlands on children's trains. The then fourteen-year-old Hajo is one of them. At the end of his life, he returns to the homes where he lived as a refugee child and rereads the letters he wrote to his parents. His experiences as a refugee in the Netherlands had a great impact on the rest of his life.
