Alex was born in Edmonton, Canada and raised in Tripoli, Libya. The son of a music teacher, he learned to play the piano, cello and guitar and spent his childhood performing in musicals and plays.

He graduated from Queen's University and trained briefly at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco before moving to Vancouver and later to Los Angeles.
