Melora Creager was born March 25, 1966 to an administrator and
physicist at a university, and a graphic designer. Being a very
artistic family, the children were 'practically required' to learn an
instrument. At the age of five, Melora took up the piano. At nine, she
took up the cello, around which her professional life now revolves. She
quit cello in the 8th grade, when she learned that it wasn't cool.
After high school, she got her chance to escape from Kansas by
attending Parsons School of Designs in New York. There, her college
friends encouraged her to take up the cello again to supplement their
live gigs. After a few years, she quit school and focussed entirely on
her music. In 1991, she formed the beginnings of Rasputina, seven girls
in Victorian undergarments rocking out on the cello. As time went on
and she became more knowledgable in the areas, she trimmed the group
down to three girls [now two] and a live drummer. Their major releases
included Thanks For the Ether [1996], How We Quit the Forrest [1998],
Cabin Fever! [2002], and Frustration Plantation [2004]. Specialising in
'funny, depressing' songs, the music of Rasputina is rich, powerful,
beautiful, and surprisingly original. Melora currently lives in
Brooklyn with her daughter, Hollis.
