An American actress, Carlotta Schock, aka Carlotta Schoch, has appeared on Broadway, Off-Broadway, and in regional theaters, including the internationally acclaimed Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis as a 2-year acting company member. She has worked with fellow actors Mary McDonnell, Stanley Tucci, Kathy Bates, Bradley Whitford, Bill Pullman, Wesley Snipes, and John Spencer.
Ms. Schoch has developed and workshopped new material with screenwriters and playwrights for over 15 years, including the workshop production of Peter Allen's Broadway musical Legs Diamond. She has been a member of New Dramatists in New York City, one of the most respected and well-known playwriting organizations in the country, and was employed as the only actress in the original acting company of the Playwrights Center in Minneapolis.
Mark Frost, co-creator with David Lynch and writer of Twin Peaks fame, cast Ms. Schoch as his female lead in his independent movie filmed in Minneapolis; Mr. Frost didn't complete the film when Hollywood called.
In Woody Allen's film Another Woman, Mr. Allen personally cast Ms. Schoch for a 2-character scene with Philip Bosco. She played the character of a psychiatrist who was seeing her psychiatrist, played by Mr. Bosco. Mr. Allen also cast her in The Purple Rose of Cairo in the coffee shop scene with Mia Farrow.
In Mike Nichols' Heartburn, Ms. Schoch was cast in the now famous dinner party scene with Meryl Streep and Jack Nicholson.
Blindfaith, a TV Mini-series starring Robert Urich and a young Johnny Galecki, was the true story of a wealthy business accused of murdering his wife to collect insurance money and included a subplot featuring Ms. Schoch.
Carlotta's first paying acting job was for the Czechoslovakian Exhibit at Expo '74, the 1974 World's Fair, in Spokane, Washington, as a solo performer. The exhibit was a movie filmed in such a way that during certain scenes of the movie, the "live," onstage actress appears to be inside the film as one of the characters. At certain other intervals, Ms. Schoch would also come on stage to ask the viewers to vote on selected action sequences as to how they wanted the story to unfold. Votes were tallied and scenes would change accordingly.
Carlotta is one of nine children, raised in the tiny town of New England, North Dakota. She received a scholarship to a drama conservatory in Spokane, Washington, graduating with a BFA in Theater, summa cum laude. Ms. Schoch's teachers, former Broadway actors and members of the Group Theatre, taught The Method as they had been trained by Lee Strasburg himself - their fellow classmates were Marlon Brando, Walter Matthau, Tony Curtis, Lee Grant.
She spent 3 months in London, England, in 1978 to study voice and speech at RADA (Royal Academy of Dramatic Art). Upon arrival at Heathrow Airport, Carlotta was detained and interrogated by British Customs for 8 hours. To this day, she still does not know why; the assumption is that she must have looked like someone on their watch list - they were still on high alert from the IRA detonating bombs in London in 1977.
