Bill Bragg, the only child of Dorothy and Marvin Bragg, was born in
Dallas, Texas in 1946. His first "big break in Show Business" came from
a Mrs. Miller who ran the boarding house where his parents lived. Mrs.
Miller had a bad habit of barging in unannounced and shouting "Let me
see little Billy J - O - E"! The way she would drag out the name Joe
caused his parents to shorten his first name to Bill; a move that
allowed him to use his birth name throughout his professional career.
His mother gave him his second "big break", in the form of her always
sharp wit and outgoing personality. She taught him how to laugh and how
to make others laugh! His father was in the night club business at
LouAnn's, the favorite stopping off location for all the big bands of
the day. This was another of Bill's "big breaks"! He would tug on the
coat tails of Guy Lombardo, Woody Herman, Artie Shaw & Lawrence Welk
and when Rock N Roll got big; he was back stage with the likes of Roy
Orbison, Fats Domino, Bo Diddley and Chubby Checker. The young Bill
Bragg learned what to say, how to say it and when to shut up.
He spoke to his first audience via the microphone on his CB Radio. Ham Radio taught Bill how to talk and tinker at the same time. After high school he turned down his parents offer to attend SMU and went to work for what was then the nation's #2 Independent Television Station, KTVT. There was no network affiliation, and even though he was hired-on as a 60 dollar a week cameraman, he spent about half of his time in front of the camera. His firs professional role was as "AJAX, the ape faced sidekick of Icky Twerp on Slam Bang Theatre. In those days, there was lots of "live" programming, and there were plenty of chances to get on TV if you were willing to work for free. During this time he went to work on weekends at KPCN Radio, working with Horace Logan, the announcer from the Louisiana Hayride who first uttered the now famous words "Elvis has left the building"! Bill was so scared that he would just tell his audience the locations of the big and little hands on the clock when he had trouble telling the time on live radio; and this trick later became his "on air trademark", along with his deep friendly voice.
In 1968, Bill went to work for KRLD-AM-FM-TV; one of the top CBS Television affiliates in the nation. They had the first color television mobile broadcast bus in the southwest, and Bill was on board when they were hired by CBS to provide worldwide coverage of The Funeral Of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Over the next 27 years, he was involved in The Dedication of The LBJ Presidental Library, along with network coverage of NFL Football, The Apollo 8 Lunar Orbit Mission and the visit of Her Majesty The Queen Of England & the visit of the Holy Father Pope John Paul II. Bragg was also involved in the coverage of 5 US Presidents and many network television shows including Sixty Minutes.
In 1979, Bill founded The National Museum Of Communications, Inc., which became the world's largest broadcast and communications Museum. He personally designed the building and exhibits, secured 21 moving vans of artifacts; which included the television camera that broadcast-ed the assassination of Lee Harvey Oswald, Thomas Edison's microscope, the master control console from the Voice Of America Studios in Washington, DC, Charlie Chaplain's movie camera, Walter Cronkite's microphone from his last CBS Evening News Broadcast, the Gold Record for "Rock Around The Clock" and the guitar that Bill Haley used when he recorded the song, Elvis Presley's silver clad belt and gold plated sunglasses and Buddy Holly's improvising guitar. The first printed copies of The King James Bible and Webster's Dictionary rounded out the collection; along with an actual leaf from a rare Gutenberg Bible. Bragg went on to established a Board of Trustees that included actor Donald O'Connor, actress Patty Duke, Jack Valenti (Special Assistant to President Lyndon Johnson and President of The Motion Picture Association of America), Edward O. Fritts (President & CEO National Association of Broadcasters) and Trammell S. Crow (Dallas, TX. civic leader and the world's largest family owned real estate developer). This group raised over 12 million dollars in funding for the 501 (c) 3 tax-exempt / non-profit Museum.
Bill founded The Yesterday USA Radio Networks in 1979, which has been broadcasting public domain Old Time Radio Shows across the nation and around the world for the over a quarter of a century! The Network is on the air 24 hours a day and in the past was heard on two powerful KU Band Satellites, many Cable Television Outlets, in 2,000 Hospitals & Nursing Homes and on many on Low-Power AM/FM Radio Stations. The Station owns one of the world's largest collections of Public Domain Old Time Radio Shows and is now heard world wide on the Internet at: www.yesterday.com Bragg was the first to introduce Internet Listeners to Old Time Radio and the service is even available via Cell Telephones and via the new Wi-Fi wireless Internet receivers. The Network has Studios located in Richardson, TX., Ft.Worth, TX., Costa Mesa, CA. and in Hollywood, CA. Live interactive broadcasts are presented seven nights a week at 10:30 PM Eastern time; featuring celebrity interviews, live call-ins from listeners around the world and an Internet based Chat Room with live color TV cameras! And speaking of celebrities, Bragg has assembled a staff of over 50 on-air professionals that include the likes of: Frank Bresee (the voice of "Little Beaver" on old time radio's Red Ryder program), 2 time Oscar winning song writer Richard Sherman, Milt Larsen (Founder of the Magic Castle in Hollywood, CA.) and country music super star Ronnie Milsap. You don't have to be famous to be a YUSA on-air Host, but everyone donates their time and talents; and a medical doctor, an attorney, a college professor, an airplane pilot, a truck driver and a motor oil salesman round out the staff. Bill Bragg holds the world's record for the most number of hours of Satellite Broadcast Time and he receives daily backup support from many broadcast professionals, electronic engineers, computer technicians and software designers world wide.
In 2002, he was selected from a group of over 500 local and national announcers by The State Fair of Texas in Dallas to perform the voice of "Big Tex". The 52 foot tall statue towers over millions of annual fair visitors each October; and he has been the official mascot of the world's largest State Fair for over 50 years. All of Tex's announcements are performed "live" and Bragg's booming voice echos over the entire 277 acre Dallas Fair Park for nine hours each day; during the entire 24 day annual event! As the Voice Of BIG TEX, Bragg has been featured on The Tonight Show, CBS This Morning, The Today Show, The View, The Ellen Show and on The Travel Channel and on The Food Channel!
Bill even found time to act in several motion pictures along the way and his latest effort "A Fair To Remember" has been chosen by the US State Department to be featured at all US Embassies around the world in 2009!
in 2005 he went to work for Electronic Data Systems (EDS an HP Company) as The Chief Broadcast Engineer of the EDS Global Broadcast Television Network. He is responsible for maintaining the video and audio quality standards for the many worldwide broadcasts and teleconferences that originate from the corporate Television Studios; located deep inside the heavily fortified EDS World Headquartes in North Texas. Mr. Bragg brings over 38 years of television, radio and motion picture experience to the GBN Broadcast Team, and has enjoyed numerous successes in many local and national markets! He is considered a pioneer in the industry, after having been involved in television from: "Black & White to Satellite".
Bragg has also evolved with technology too, being one of the first broadcasters to stream audio on the Internet. Whether it's a screw driver in his shirt pocket or a script in his right hand; Bill is comfortable both in front of and behind the camera or microphone.
