Sylvia Opert, whose 93rd birthday was celebrated October 30th, was an old-time movie star! Born in 1924, in Johannesburg, Republic of South Africa, she was the daughter of Louis and Fannie Opert, of New York City. Louis and Fannie divorced in the mid-1930s, and Sylvia stayed with her mother. The two lived in Beverly Hills, with Sylvia working as a dancer since childhood. She danced ballet originally, and by 1940 was a part of the Ada Broadbent Ballet troupe. She also specialized in exotic and native dances, as her filmography can readily show.
She was a lead dancer in various small movies between 9 and 12 years old. She made her adult movie debut in 1942, in Road to Morocco, a Bob Hope / Bing Crosby epic. Her next movie was Happy Go Lucky, a breezy, simple and very endearing Dick Powell musical. Then came Background to Danger, a tightly plotted, well made spy thriller. The supporting cast is top notch like Humphrey Bogart, Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre, and Brenda Marshall. Sylvia also appeared in Thank Your Lucky Stars. She then had a small but memorable role in The Desert Song - (1943). (see her dance early in this YouTube clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXchQj233l0) She was also in two short features - Princess Papaya and Dance Comique. Sylvia's last full movie was Devotion, about the lives of the Bronte sisters.
Sylvia was also a pin-up girl during WWII, and very popular with the "Yank" publication.
She continued dancing in revues and nightclubs, and finally gave up her acting/dancing career after her second marriage in 1946.
Retaining her SAG membership for her entire life, she recently got back into the movie business at age 60 and 70, Sylvia had a small role as the ladies' room attendant at the Plaza Hotel in First Wives Club, and also did several TV commercials, the last being a Miller's High Life ad where she was depicted going up a long staircase. She did commercials into her 70's and 80's, because they "...picked her up in a limo, paid her, and the food on the set was fabulous," she reported.
In January 1946, Sylvia married Jack H. Spiro. Spiro was born on November 24, 1906 (making him almost 20 years older than Sylvia). They moved to New York, where he was a jewelry salesman. The couple later settled in the Los Angeles area. They had two sons, Lee Mark, born on December 14, 1949, and Richard Martin, born on August 20, 1954. Jack Spiro died unexpectedly on January 3, 1976, and their 30 year marriage ended. Sylvia, Lee and Richard still live in the Los Angeles area.
