Yönetmenin (Pavel Lungin) en son çıkardığı film olan Tsar, Aleksei ıvanov senaristliğinde yapılmıştır. Yönetmeni ise Büyük Patron filmiyle sizlere hatırlatabiliriz. Konuya gelmek gerekirse, Rusya’da kaos vardır. Bu belirtiler İvan (Pyotr Mamonov) için kıyamet gününün yaklaşması belirtileridir. Mutlak gücü elinde bulunduran ve kutsal bir görevi olduğuna kâni olan İvan, hükümdarlığı altındakilere tam anlamıyla kan kusturmaktadır İvan’ın yakın arkadaşı olan dinî lider Psikopos Philip (Oleg Yankovskiy), Çar’ın zorba yönetimine isyan eder.
