Hayatın zorlukları içinde debelenen bir komedi senaryo yazarı olan homoseksüel David (Jesse Plemons), kanserin son evresinde olan annesine yardım etmek ve destek olmak için New York’tan Sacramento’ya taşınır. Muhafazakâr babası ve kendisinden yaşça çok küçük olan kız kardeşi ile 10 yıl sonra ilk kez birlikte yaşayacaktır. David çocukluğunun geçtiği bu evde tıpkı bir yabancı gibi hisseder. Annesinin sağlık durumu kötüye gittikçe, David çılgınca bu korkunç deneyimden anlamlar çıkartmaya çalışır ve kendisi de dâhil herkesi her şeyin yolunda gittiğine dair ikna etmeye çalışır.
